Setsoantso sa lelapa is Sesotho for a family photo.
In 2014, I started a series of portraits with people holding photographs and documents they preserved through decades of change. These objects —family portraits, wedding photos, identity books— are often the only surviving evidence of a person's family history. The project was inspired by the Bloemfontein National Museum’s oral history initiative on Batho Location, the city’s oldest township. It adds a visual dimension to the recorded histories.
